Costas G. Hadjipanayis, L. Dade Lunsford Professor of Neurological Surgery, School of Medicine, and director of the UPMC Center for Image-Guided Neurosurgery, has been elected chair of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) Section on Tumors by the section's executive committee. The Section on Tumors—the largest organized group of neurosurgical oncologists in the world—has a 40-year history of advocating and promoting patient care, research and education in the field of neurosurgical oncology. Hadjipanayis began his two-year term as chair in May.
A world-renowned expert in brain tumors and stereotactic radiosurgery, Hadjipanayis has led numerous clinical trials and secured NIH, private foundation, and University grants for brain tumor research. As codirector of the University of Pittsburgh's Brain Tumor Program and director of the Brain Tumor Nanotechnology Laboratory at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, he has pioneered the use of 5-ALA for fluorescence-guided surgery in the United States and developed magnetic hyperthermia therapy for glioblastoma.
