Norman Wolmark, professor of surgery, School of Medicine, received the Medallion for the Advancement of Surgical Care this month from the prestigious American Surgical Association.
Wolmark has contributed to some of the most important advances in surgical oncology over the past four decades. He received his medical degree from McGill University and trained in surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. He also completed surgical oncology training at the surgery branch of the National Cancer Institute and at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Joining the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh in 1979, Wolmark rapidly rose through the ranks to become professor of surgery and the inaugural Dr. Mark M. Ravitch Professor of Surgery. He assumed the chairmanship of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project in 1994, a position he has held to the present.
Among his other honors are a Giant of Cancer Care Award from OncLive, a Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Surgical Oncology, the Gianni Bonadonna Breast Cancer Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction in Clinical Research from Susan G. Komen®.
