Pitt’s Vaccination and Health Connection Hub is offering vaccinations to protect against many of the respiratory illnesses that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports are surging now in states including Pennsylvania.
As of Friday, Jan. 3, COVID-19 was on the rise across most of the country and is expected to continue an upward trajectory in the coming weeks. Seasonal influenza activity is currently high and still increasing, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections are elevated in many regions, with young children representing the most emergency department visits and hospitalizations. Older adults also are being admitted for RSV at elevated rates in some parts of the nation.
Peak hospitalizations for all three illnesses are on track to settle at or lower than during last year's fall and winter virus cycle, according to CDC, but far above levels seen prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Individuals are encouraged to protect themselves through vaccination.
The Hub, at 4041 Fifth Ave. in Nordenberg Hall, offers vaccines for protection against respiratory viruses and all adult vaccines available in the United States. Click here to see what vaccines you may need. Appointments can be made at thehub@pitt.edu or by calling 1-412-383-4372.
The Hub also offers travel vaccinations and can help people sort through vaccinations they may not realize they can get, because recommendations have changed. For example, in October 2024, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended that pneumococcal vaccines begin at age 50, rather than the previous recommendation of age 65. This change was made to address the substantial amount of preventable invasive pneumococcal disease among people ages 50 through 64.
The Hub’s spring hours are:
- Monday – 10 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.
- Tuesday – 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- Wednesday – 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- Thursday – 10 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.
- Friday – 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
The Hub will be closed for appointments between 1-1:30 p.m. for lunch. The front desk will be staffed, and staff can answer questions or schedule an appointment for you.
The Hub will be closed on Jan. 20, 2025, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
