On Dec. 18, 2024, approximately 250 health sciences students celebrated their commencement with schools across the University of Pittsburgh at the Petersen Events Center, proudly receiving their diplomas in the presence of family and friends.

Holden Thorp, a chemist, pharmaceutical executive and editor-in-chief at the journal Science, served as this year’s commencement speaker and spoke on the themes of individuality, the imperfection of institutions and the importance of making choices based on one’s own merit rather than by the influence of others.

“Some of you might not have their grand plan all worked out,” Thorp said. “If that’s the case, you’re right on schedule.”

Anantha Shekhar, senior vice chancellor for the health sciences and John and Gertrude Petersen Dean of the School of Medicine, introduced each school and congratulated graduates on their accomplishments.

This year, Pitt’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences led the University in hybrid education with its Physician Assistant Studies and Doctor of Physical Therapy programs. The Physician Assistant Studies cohort was the first to graduate from the program. This is the second year Pitt has held a winter commencement, to honor students who earned their degrees between May and December.

As blue and gold confetti rained from the ceiling, the University community gathered in song for “Sweet Caroline,” capturing the spirit of celebration of the monumental day.
