George K. Michalopoulos, Distinguished Professor of Pathology, School of Medicine, has been selected to receive the 2024 American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) Distinguished Achievement Award.
The award honors Michalopoulos’s sustained scientific contributions to the field of liver disease and the scientific foundations of hepatology and recognizes his lifelong commitment to the field of hepatology.
He has made significant contributions to the study of liver function, carcinogenesis and regeneration. Michalopoulos’s laboratory was associated with the early events that led to the discovery of hepatocyte growth factor and its receptor (c-Met), both essential to the understanding of liver regeneration. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) have funded his career investigations for more than 40 years.
Michalopoulos served as chair of Pitt’s Department of Pathology for 32 years before stepping down in 2023.
He will receive the award at The Liver Meeting of AASLD in San Diego, Nov. 15-19, 2024
